hand crafted bowls

Lathe

I am endlessly fascinated by the beauty and diversity that abound in the native woods of the Pacific Northwest. I avoid commercial lumber. Instead, I find wood blocks, usually from urban property owners whose tree was overgrown, diseased or felled by storm. I search out the pieces that most woodworkers would avoid, because that’s where the most character can be found.

There can be surprises inside a log. I never know the final form my bowl will take until it is “roughed out”, or turned to approximate shape. Only then can I see what surprises await inside the block.
